Housing & Legal Options for Women Experiencing Domestic Violence Dates: Monday, 5th July 2010 This one day course is suitable for any professional wishing to gain further understanding of the legal and housing options available to women experiencing domestic violence.
The course will cover the following issues: - Occupancy right for clients whose relationships have broken down due to domestic violence
- Civil law injunctions (non-molestation orders and occupation orders)
- Protection from Harrassment Act
- Sanctuary Projects
- Homelessness and housing rights for clients made homeless by domestic violence
The course Aims: To give participants an understanding of the legal and housing options available to clients affected by domestic violence. Counselling & Communication Skills for Front Line Professionals Dates: Wednesday 8th September & Thursday 9th September 2010 This two-day CSCT counselling skills course aims to increase the confidence and ability of front line workers to communicate effectively and appropriately with clients. Participants will gain the practical experience of using counselling skills and an opportunity to reflect and build on their current communication skills. The course will cover: - Helping strategies: Understanding the range of skills required and identifying individual comfort/discomfort zones
- Factors to consider when referring clients for counselling and an overview of the different counselling approaches
- Identiying factors which influence the development of different communication skills
- Active listening skills ( including reflection, clarification and summary)
- Responding to client problems
- Understanding and developing appropriate body language
- Building and maintaining appropriate boundaries (physical & spacial, time, role and privacy boundaries
- When and how to refer clients to other agencies
- Types of questions (how to ask appropriate and effective questions)
- Role of silence in communication
- Barriers to good communication and strategies to overcome these

Suitbale for Frontline workers who wish to improve their listening and communication skills in order to enhance their work with clients, colleagues and external agencies. Aims & Objectives - Identify the difference between providing counselling and using counselling skills
- Improve ability to refer clients to appropriate counselling projects whe required
- Improved ability to respond to client problems effectively
- Examine why and how to establish appropriate boundaries in the workplace (this includes a focus on physical, time, role and privacy/self disclosure boundaries)
- Identify how to ask appropriate and helpful questions
- Identify ways to overcome barriers to good communication
- Identify the importance of self-awareness in communication
