Counselling, Support Groups & Workshops

How long is the waiting list?

A Unfortunately due to demand there is usually a waiting list for the first appointment and then to be allocated to a counsellor.  How long this takes depends on times the woman can do or she can only do one venue and if she needs a venue that can provide childcare.   It can take a matter of days or weeks depending on the circumstances.

Q How do I know someone I am seeing meets your criteria?

A Any woman living or working in London who has experienced or is currently experiencing domestic violence can take up our services.  The definition of domestic violence includes physical, psychological, financial and sexual abuse, including rape and sexual assault.  If it is a woman who has been abused as child then we are not the right agency

Q Is childcare provided?

We aim to provide childcare at some of the venues we use as we recognise that access to childcare can stop a woman from taking up our services.  For the support groups and workshops a crèche is always provided so long as a place is booked in advance.

Q Do you have to come to the office in East or West London?
A Most of the initial appointments take place in either the East or West London office.  In East London we do a limited number of appointments at different venues.  After the first appointment, the counselling can take place at a variety of locations spread across different boroughs, we will discuss the best location for the woman at the first meeting.

Q Are your counselling services borough bound?

Our counselling services are not borough bound.  Woman from anywhere in London can access our services, but we only offer counselling at locations within a limited number of boroughs.

Q My social worker thinks it would be good for me to come, but I’m not sure, do I have to come?

A At Woman’s Trust all our services are client led, so it is up to you if you want to come.  Counselling is very different from some other services, so if you don’t feel it is right for you then you don’t have to come.  If you are unsure about what is involved in counselling, then please call us to talk about it.

Q There’s a child protection issue, so I need to know what is happening in the counselling?

A As a professional you may be working for the child where there are child protection issues, we see our role as supporting the woman.  We will not disclose any information that is said in any of our mental health services.   We appreciate the child protection concerns and if anything is said by the woman using our services that raise our concerns around child protection we would implement our own child protection policy.

Q What experience do your counsellors have?

A All our counsellors are volunteers who are in the final stages of a counselling diploma, working towards accreditation or accredited.  Before they start at Woman’s Trust they undergo a rigorous selection procedure and must attend a three day intensive training run by our trainer on domestic violence.

Q How is the clinical work managed?

A All counsellors must attend fortnightly supervision by a trained, experienced supervisor who carries clinical responsibility for the work.
